Lots of kink in pop culture
Have you ever been watching a movie and go, “WOW, I just spotted a kink or fetish?” I have. Quinten Tarantino has a foot fetish! That’s just one example.
Oh sure, sometimes there is an obvious reference like in the movie 50 Shades of Grey. By the way, that’s a pitiful portrayal of BDsm and power exchange. I love “The Secretary” so much more and recommend that movie. I got to chatting with my writing submissive, servus, about this topic. He writes,
“I’d love to have a debate about the depictions you mention, and The Secretary sounds like a great place to start – I can’t think of that many serious attempts to tackle the subject properly and it’s a fascinating one.”
It’s hard to capture the emotional side of life
Movies, art, literature and music all seek to illuminate life. Some capture the emotional side better than others. Not all art is equal, nor should it be. A song like “Party in the USA” is just a fun pop song. Contrast this with Edvard Munch’s The Scream which he calls “the study of the soul, that is to say the study of my own self.” Each art form serves a purpose. You know I enjoy diversity.
Fetish scene and the desire to be known
People who play in the fetish scene are like all humans, we have a desire to be seen, heard and known. I think that’s why kinky people get irked with the one dimensional portrayal of kink in popular culture. Sure, latex looks sexy and leather is a visually dominant statement … but, that’s just the outer depiction — the inner world is where the real riches are.

Hi Ms
About Tarantino’s foot fetish, remember the opening scene in Pulp Fiction where Jules and Vincent are talking about Tony Rocky Horror giving Mia Wallace a foot massage. We don’t know why Marcellus threw him out the window, but word was it was because of a foot massage. LOL!

Best line ever — “No ticklin’ or nuthin’ !” hahahahahahahhaha
There have been several recent “tangential” attempts to kink in the mainstream. A Danerous Method and Professor Marston are two I can think of recently. While the characters are certainly depicted as outside of “normal”, for lack of better word, I don’t think those movies attacked kink.
Kink is walking a very fine line today because there is usually a top\bottom unequalness about the relationship in an age where equality and fairness are looked at as what should be the priority.
That’s an interesting comment wellspanked and I hadn’t that of that — but you’re so right! I know in the era of #MeToo the issues of any sort of equality or pain directed at women will make for cringeworthy or yikes kinds of emotions — so Femdom is sort of outside that but it is still def outside of the “norm” and therefore difficult to convey in a nuanced fashion.
Very cool about you taking up drawing Ms. O. Sent you some stuff. You’ll be hanging in the Guggenheim in a month!
Google “hyper realistic drawing” sometime if you want your mind blown. Went to an exhibit once. Thought all the drawings were photographs. Absolutely amazing!
WOAH !!!!! Looking at those now — I wonder if there’s something I can do with Paint or Corel and almost like a mixed media kind of thing. THANK YOU for the art supplies!!!! I love designing physical space — interior design as art sort of thing and I’ve long enjoyed collage — both of those things are using something that is already there — so I’m curious how this will work when I have a blank canvas (or paper). I have TONS of visuals in my head and can communicate what I “see” in my head verbally (or written word) but I am visual so wooo hoooooooooooo The Guggenheim here I come! Damn it’s probably going to be museum tease and denial. hahahahahahahahaha I keep you posted — ESPECIALLY if it’s even close to anything I like! LOL
I agree…. but I think there really aren’t any movies I would recommend as capturing the BDSM mind set and that if it’s players. Even Ann Rice’s great book ‘Exit to Eden’ was destroyed by a horrible movie that simply didn’t get the subject matter!
(((( I’m going to post this part in a blog post with my comments — this is FASCINATING and beautifully written & well thought out.)))))
It’s my hope that , like The LBGT revolution, someone in the media and film, will eventually get past the stereotypes of BDSM and related kinks and do the same for folks like us who enjoy it as a healthy part of our lives
Oh princess —- what a wonderful comment !!!!!!!!!!! You mention some things that I’m going to turn into a whole blog post because this is incredibly smart and thoughtful. This excellent comment won’t get you out of chastity — laughs — but it does inspire my kudos!!!!
Hello there, Olivia– I enjoy what you have to say about the subject matter. Concerning Quentin Tarantino, he has been pretty open about his foot fetish and the way he tends to include close ups of bare feet in his movies. My favorite is in dusk till dawn where Salma Hayek dances for the crowd and she pours beer down her leg so it drips off her toes into his mouth. So, very hot. In regards to Princess comment, I agree. I believe it’s just a matter of time before kink is more mainstream and portrayed in a sexy and healthy way.
Ohhhhhhh Princess Andi I’m totally going to check out that beer down the leg, toes in mouth, scene! ~swoons~ Sounds like I need to do that in a foot fetish scene! grins
