This blog is inspired by a poll comment by bobo on our adult social networking site, Enchantrix Empire.  I did a poll asking if anyone had ever tried to get rid of a fetish.  He responded with:  Is something a fetish just because it turns you on?  WOW.  Okay, now that’s an interesting question.  I don’t pretend to have all the answers but I damn sure have a boatload of experience with so called fetish phone sex and real life bdsm and kink fetish communities.  I’ll admit, it never even occurred to me to question the word fetish!

What is a fetish?

I’d like to hear YOUR thoughts and read your comments about the term FETISH.  Here’s a dictionary definition of fetish: an object or bodily part whose real or fantasied presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification and that is an object of fixation to the extent that it may interfere with complete sexual expression.”  That definition kind of bugs me because it implies there is some right standard for “complete sexual expression” and that “fantasy” is somehow not part of that “complete sexual expression.”

I like the word fetish

Maybe I have a visceral reaction to that definition because I LIKE the word, fetish.  It’s sort of like the words, slut and pervert.  In many parts of society those are supposed to be insults but in the kink community they have been “owned” as badges of honor.  I like those words!  Maybe fetish is the same way.  Like I said, I don’t have the answers, I just find that conversation interesting so feel free to chime in with your blog comments!
